It is well known that the stability of emulsions and the performance of inkjet inks are significantly influenced by the presence of particles several standard deviations from the main population of particles.The safety of emulsion-based drugs, for example, with mean diameters of 300 nm can be affected by trace amounts of particles > 5 microns, particles that are more than 10 times the mean diameter. Laser Diffraction and other particle sizing techniques do not have the sensitivity to detect these small safety hazards. That is why USP-729 addresses this with the requirement that emulsion-based drugs be evaluated with Light Obscuration or SPOS .
Oil emulsions and other industrial dispersions do present challenges for particle size analysis because they are usually highly concentrated. This means that they require considerable dilution before most particle sizing techniques can be utilized. The Accusizer 780 APS solves this problem with a unique two-stage dilution system which can set a range of dilution factors (10 to 144,000) in real time to accommodate samples that change from lot-to-lot or that change with time. The 780 APS dilution system takes the thought out of introducing a sample because the feedback system will automatically find the optimal dilution.
